Columbus first landed in Venezuela in August 1498. Alonso de
Ojeda discovered Lake Maracaibo in 1499 and called the land
Venezuela or little Venice because the natives had built houses
on stilts over the lake. Under Spanish rule until 1821, a
republic was formed in 1830 after session from Columbia. The
military has ruled for most of the 20th Century while promoting
the oil industry. In 1959 the country enjoyed democratically
elected governments. Venezuela was a founder of OPEC
(Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries). In January
1976, the oil industry was nationalized and recent exploration
has begun on the Orinoco tar belt, thought to have the world's
largest oil reserves. @
